ETFE layer system

ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) is a fluorine-based high performance polymer known for its high light transmission, durability, and lightweight properties. A relatively new concept widely used in architectural applications, particularly in roofing and facades, due to its weather resistance and flexibility. ETFE systems can be designed as single-layer or double-layer (multi-layer) structures, each with distinct advantages. Tensile structure

Single-Layer ETFE System

  • Consists of a single ETFE membrane stretched over a supporting structure (steel or aluminum frame)
    • Lightweight and cost-effective compared to multi-layer systems.
    • High light transmission (up to 95%, similar to glass).
    • Simple installation and maintenance.
    • Good thermal performance in moderate climates
  • Applications: Canopies, skylights, and simple roof structures where insulation is not a primary concern.
Tensile structure

Double-Layer or Multi-Layer ETFE Cushion System

  • Consists of two or more ETFE layers separated by an air cavity (sometimes pressurized for added rigidity).
  • Improved thermal insulation (lower U-value) due to the air gap, reducing heating/cooling costs.
  • Enhanced structural stability, especially in large-span structures.
  • The transparency can reflect any RGB lighting colors that makes the structure vivid and prominent in dull surroundings.
  • Can incorporate dynamic shading by adjusting air pressure between layers.
  • Better acoustic insulation compared to single-layer systems.
  • Applications: Canopies, skylights, green houses, plant nurseries and complex roof structures where insulation is significantly considered along with natural sunlight.
